The Andersen Corporation is known for taking part in causes that aim to protect the environment. This year, our company has taken our commitment to environmental protection to a whole new level with the release of our first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
Our Environmental Product Declaration
Andersen Corporation’s first EPD addresses Renewal by Andersen Double-Hung Window’s cradle-to-gate lifecycle impact. This window features Fibrex, a pre-consumer recycled material made of up to 40 percent reclaimed wood fiber. The release of the EPD accompanies the publication of the industry’s Product Category Rule.
A trusted name in replacement window and patio doors in Rochester, NY, Andersen has collaborated for the past four years with other industry leaders in developing the window PCR. Product Category Rules define the parameters in conducting EPDs and life cycle assessments that aim to increase transparency and consistency across companies to reduce product environmental impacts. Green building and certification systems, such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, recognize and reward the use of products with a published EPD.
Championing Sustainability
According to Vice President of Sustainability Jim Weglewski, the release of the first EPD is an important step in the company’s journey to sustainability. He adds that enhancing product transparency supports Andersen’s ongoing efforts to produce durable, energy-efficient products to help customers reduce energy consumption. This leads to lower utility costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
By increasing product transparency, the company upholds their commitment to the Ceres Climate Declaration and public sustainability goals, which pertain to the reduction of operational water and energy use and waste by 20%, per unit of product, by the year 2020.
